I have a pretty standard cable plan - I think it is naked cable, with no speed boost, no home phone, or other add-ons ($69.95/month). My download speed is really great, consistently at 35 Mbps or better. No complaints in that area. But my upload is artificially limited to 1 Mbps. I can actually watch the speed indicator needle boucing off the 1 Mbps limit when I run a test. I have asked Telstra what can be done about that, and the answer is always something along the lines of "this is not something we control but depends on the number of people using the internet in your area at the time". No comment about how the download speed manages to be consistently high under the same conditions, though. The upload speed is quite obviously a setting applied by Telstra, rather than a physical limit in the cable infrastructure or modem. Frankly, an upload speed like that is a pain when using applications like Skype (with video). Also, most people use MUCH more download volume than upload, so Telstra removing the upload limit would have no negative impact on the performance of their system overall (in my opinion). I just don't get the point of the limit. Any ideas?
